WARRENMANG WINS AGAIN!

MAJOR  INTERNATIONAL TOURISM AWARD
GREAT WINE CAPITALS GLOBAL NETWORK

Following hot on the heels of winning the PRIME TELEVISION GOLD AWARD for the best Tourism Business in the Goldfields  for 2003, co-owners Luigi and Athalie Bazzani have been notified that their Moonambel business,  Warrenmang Vineyard & Resort has been selected by a panel of international judges as the first Australian winner  for the 2003

GREAT WINE CAPITALS GLOBAL NETWORK  “BEST OF” in WINE TOURISM.

The award was announced at a glittering ceremony in the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao Spain on Tuesday last 6th October when the International Jury nominated winners in various countries including Australia, France, Italy, Spain, USA, South America, Portugal and South Africa.  President of the Victorian Wine Industry Association, Paul Chambers accepted the awards on behalf of the Bazzanis.

Melbourne is a member of the Global Network of Great Wine Capitals, along with the other great wine cities of Bordeaux, Florence, Bilbao, San Francisco, Santiago, Port and Cape Town.  This honour reinforces Melbourne as Australia’s premier wine city, the cosmopolitan gateway to 22 distinct wine regions and more than 350 wineries.  As a member of the Global Network Melbourne actively promotes international winery tourism, as well as working with sister cities on economic academic and cultural development.

Warrenmang Vineyard & Resort pioneered winery tourism in Victoria when Luigi and Athalie Bazzani created a charming little wine village of cosy cottages and luxury suites plus an award winning restaurant and conference centre in the Victorian Pyrenees in 1989.

The Resort is Victoria’s and probably Australia’s most awarded vineyard restaurant and resort and the Bazzani’s are delighted to add this international recognition to their impressive string of achievements.  Robert Parker Jr  one of the world’s most highly regarded wine critics recently described Warrenmang’s 2000 Estate Shiraz as one of the finest wines he has tasted from Victoria. Warrenmang wines are also receiving accolades around the world and have recently been listed in the LCBO Governments ‘Classics Catalogue’ alongside Grange and other prestige wines of the world.

The Age - Good Food Guide

Warrenmang Vineyard Resort Moonambel

If Luigi Bazzani were of the retiring kind, retired he would be. Instead, this pioneer of some of provincial Victoria's finest restaurants continues to host, and improve, the state's most outstanding vineyard resort. Visit The Age Good Food GuideIn the belief that people should enjoy good food and wine in a relaxing environment, he built a little hillside village of oiled timber lodges above his long established vineyard and the charming chalet style restaurant that was once to be his retirement home.

Chefs have come and gone, but this year the food, always of an exemplary standard, has never been better. Sven and Clare Ulrich create city sophisticated dishes from the best regional produce. On our latest visit we marveled at the flavour and texture of a smoked rabbit terrine with mustard fruits and roasted Redbank pheasant on truffle scented potato puree with fresh figs and grapes.

Warrenmang's signature dish, the Pyrenees hare with dry sherry sauce, has been given a new twist with stilton cheese and braised red cabbage. The vegetarian dishes, such as a wild mushroom and okra tartlet gratineed with a creamy fetta and sage sabayon, are sensational. So is a remarkable roasted pear tatin with, yes, blue cheese ice cream.

There is a formidable list of Pyrenees wines, and a lighter, optional a la carte lunch menu.

WINEWISE MAGAZINE VOL 14. NO. 1 APRIL 1998

1996 WARRENMANG SHIRAZ - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Vibrantly fresh, spicy blackberry is at the forefront on both the nose and the palate of this Pyrenees wine. It has persistent flavour, firm, fine tannins and complementary toasty oak. Will greatly reward five or more years cellaring.

1996 WARRENMANG ESTATE CHARDONNAY - RECOMMENDED

This Pyrenees Chardonnay has lots of fruit, structure and complexity and just needs time to allow all the components to knit together.

1996 WARRENMANG GRAND PYRENEES - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Here's a red just packed with typically intense regional flavour. Cassis characteristics meld well with vanilla/toast oak and positive tannins. Needs a few years.

DIVINE - FOOD AND WINE MAGAZINE JULY 98Luigi Riserva

LUIGI RISERVA 1991 - 1997

An unusual style that works amazingly well...an absolute cracker! At one level you've got a super-rich Central Victorian Shiraz, full of perfumed blood plums and dark cherry, and on the other level a mature cabernet of truffle, roast meat and lovely French oak notes. And fermenting them together has ensured a seamless unification.

Needless to say the palate is equally impressive. The initial rush of exuberant younger Shiraz gives way to the more structured cabernet, which delivers a refined finish of oak and drying tannins. It really is a great partnership the Shiraz providing all the upfront, hedonistic fruit whilst the cabernet does the more serious job of giving the wine structure and depth.

As for laying a bottle or two down to cellar, why bother? It's got the best of both worlds now - youth and maturity, both at once. On the rare occasions when these sorts of situations present themselves, dive in head first, I say.

How did Rob Walters describe it in Reds in Bed? 'One of my favourite wines of the tasting. More than the sum of its parts - the Luigi Riserva more than fits the bill.' It may upset the purists - but it tastes great.

UNCORKED MAGAZINE MAY 1998

WARRENMANG ESTATE SHIRAZ 1996 - 5 stars

A sensational Shiraz from Victoria's Pyrenees region. It shouts concentration in every regard; there is deep color and a powerful inky and spicy cool area nose with a lacing of mint. Very tight and undeveloped in the mouth, it has taut structure and firm, dry, serious tannins well balanced by fruit that bode well for ageing. Begs to be cellared. Serve with Beef Wellington.
